REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND STEM CELLS

Novel techniques of isolating, culturing or using stem cells with their ability to proliferate and differentiate into a variety of organ cell types opened up many new avenues of medical research. Regenerative Medicine approaches base on using the abilities of stem cells for the development of innovative therapies, typically to trigger the body´s natural healing abilities. Examples include using liver progenitor cells in extracorporeal liver support bioreactors for acute-on-chronic liver disease and skin progenitors isolated from a skin biopsy of a burn victims own skin sprayed onto his burn wounds for wound healing.

STEM CELLS

Embryonic-, fetal- and gene-technologically modified stem cells are target of many business plans, but harnessing them is often associated with hurdles not foreseen when companies start to develop a product.

Together with other innovators we follow a rather distinct strategy. The enormous cell biological potential of the so called adult stem cells, the stem cells in the patients own tissues has not been tapped as it could have. To give two examples: our autologous adult skin stem cell isolation techniques and our skin stem cell SkinGun allows to revolutionize burn therapy in trauma centers. Our bioreactors for cells in the liver are in development to provide these cells for extracorporeal liver support.

ANOTHER SPECIAL TYPE OF STEM CELLS - THE MORE MATURE PROGENITOR CELL

Stem cells typically life a quiet life as a pool for the generation of the proliferating and regenerative intermediate cells, the progenitor cells, the first daughter generation of adult stem cells. Hair follicle progenitor cells grow our hair; skin progenitor cells regenerate our own skin completely almost every six week; liver progenitor cells can regenerate the liver in astonishing ways following an acute intoxication. More recently, the internationally growing field characterized corresponding cells of other organs, like intestine, ear, eye, muscle, have comparable abilities. We at HYBRID ORGAN focus on bioengineering methods and medical device development for these progenitor cells.

FAST TRACK TO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

While the field of regenerative medicine was traditionally focusing on stem cells, that in theory have broader potentials and thus could form more attractive business plans, we and other pioneers believe that using adult stem cells may lead faster to viable therapies. There are no ethical concerns, dangers of tumor formation or differentiation into non-desired pathways were not seen. Using these cells from the patient's own tissue as autologous cell source also avoids any immunological concern.

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE OF PROGENITORS: FIRST- AND SECOND GENERATION

First-generation approaches would take the cells out of the body, grow them and try to get them into the right place and do the right job. That is not only complicated from a cell biology and biotechnology perspective, such “major manipulation” - as regulatory bodies such as the FDA defines in vitro culture - also involves major regulatory hurdles and associated expenses. Instead, second-generation approaches target the tissues to be regenerated directly. E.g. our autologous skin progenitor cell isolation techniques, isolate the cells from a non-burned skin sample and spray them using our highly specialized spry deposition device, the SkinGun for autologous spray-grafting, within two hours in one burn surgery session.
